Fund your wallet from South Africa
Coinbase does not sell crypto for rand in South Africa. The simplest route is VALR. VALR is a South African exchange licensed by the FSCA, and it can send USDC on Base.
This guide is here to help. It is not financial advice. PowaAgent is not linked to VALR or any exchange named here. Each exchange sets its own fees, limits and rules.
- Pay rand into VALRBank EFT
- Buy USDC
- Withdraw USDCNetwork: Base
- Your PowaAgent wallet
What you need
- A South African bank account.
- Your ID, for VALR's identity check.
- Your PowaAgent wallet address, from the Funding page.
Step by step
- Create a VALR account at valr.com and verify your identity.
- Add rand. Go to Wallets → ZAR → Deposit → Via EFT. Pay from your own bank account. Use your VALR reference (it starts with VR). An EFT can take up to 48 hours to clear. See VALR: deposit rand.
- Buy USDC on the USDC/ZAR market, or use Simple Buy.
- Withdraw USDC. Go to Wallets → USDC → Withdraw. Paste your PowaAgent wallet address. Under Withdrawal network, choose Base.

- Fill in the Travel Rule details. For wallet type, choose Self-hosted wallet. Enter your own name and address.

- Check the network fee on screen, then confirm with your 2FA code.
- Check your balance in the PowaAgent portal. If the USDC shows there, it has arrived.
VALR charges its own fees. See VALR's charges.
Other options
- Luno sends USDC on Ethereum only, not Base. Do not send USDC from Luno straight to your PowaAgent wallet.
- Global exchanges such as Binance and OKX also send USDC on Base. See Fund your wallet from other countries.
Good to know
- Travel Rule: South African exchanges must ask for details when you send crypto out. This is a Financial Intelligence Centre rule. Answer honestly that it is your own wallet.
- New Reserve Bank rules (draft): In August 2026 the SARB proposed rules that may count sends to your own wallet against your yearly foreign allowance. They are not in force yet.
- Tax: SARS treats crypto as an asset. Ask a tax adviser about your own situation.
